tradition by Keren Chelsea

tradition:
my mother and her mother before her
and her mother before her
teaching girls not to speak,
telling them their body is not theirs
but the boy’s who gets there first

//

we look into the eyes of our daughters
and wonder how they learned to be so meek
then with the same breath we say
that boys will be boys and
that’s just the way it is

//

tradition
is not passed down
without people

//

so where will you stand?
where are you standing?
